Parenting FAQ and Answers
What is ADHD?
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder and is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain regulates and reliably accesses attention, action, memory, motivation, emotions, energy, and behavior. It can look very different from one child to another and often affects much more than the ability to sit still or pay attention. Understanding how ADHD may be affecting a child early can help parents put the right support in place and help their child build skills for greater success and independence.
What exactly is the Foundations program?
Foundations is the educational starting point of my program. It helps parents understand what ADHD is, the many ways it can show up in everyday life, and what may be happening beneath their child’s behavior. It is appropriate whether you are wondering if ADHD may be affecting your child or your child already has a diagnosis. No diagnosis is required. The goal is to help you better understand your child and build a strong foundation for responding more effectively.
Tell me about Applied Parent Coaching.
Applied Parent Coaching builds on what you learned in Foundations and turns understanding into action. Over six sessions, we focus on the challenges affecting your child and family, identify what may be getting in the way, and develop practical strategies that fit your child and your everyday life. The goal is to reduce unnecessary conflict, build skills, maintain accountability, and gradually help your child become more independent.
Is the Foundations Program a prerequisite?
Typically, yes. Foundations gives you a strong understanding of ADHD and how it may be affecting your child so that we can use our coaching time to focus on your family’s specific challenges and practical strategies. In some circumstances, starting directly with coaching may make sense, and I’m happy to talk with you about the best place to begin.
Will you work with my child one-on-one?
No. I work only with parents and caregivers. My role is to help you better understand your child and develop practical ways to respond to their needs, challenges, and behavior. I do not provide coaching or therapy directly to children or teens.
Is a formal diagnosis necessary?
Absolutely not. You can start the process while navigating evaluations or simply when observing traits that suggest ADHD. My role is to help you interpret patterns and refine the questions you ask specialists. While I do not diagnose, these sessions provide the clarity needed to decide if professional medical testing is the logical next step.
Which age groups do you serve?
I specialize in providing guidance for those raising children and teenagers in elementary and middle school.
Where do the sessions take place?
For your convenience and flexibility, every Foundations and coaching session is conducted virtually.
How frequently do we meet?
I recommend a weekly rhythm to maintain momentum while leaving space to practice new techniques. If your schedule requires more flexibility, we can certainly discuss bi-weekly options or other arrangements based on availability.
Are these sessions considered therapy?
No. My programs are an educational and action-based partnership. I do not provide medical treatments or clinical mental health diagnoses. My work is a supplement to, not a replacement for, the essential care provided by licensed doctors or therapeutic professionals.
What happens in our initial meeting?
The 20-minute discovery call is a low-pressure space for you to share your journey and for us to see if our perspectives align. It is a time for logistical questions and fit-assessment rather than a formal coaching or diagnostic deep-dive.
Why can my child only do things sporadically?
Success that isn't consistent usually points to a lag in executive function rather than a lack of willpower. ADHD impacts the brain's ability to reliably engage memory and motivation when needed. Learning to see the difference between a child's "won't" and their "can't" is a key component of our work together.
Is medication a requirement for coaching?
No. My strategies are designed to be effective regardless of your medical choices. We focus on environmental and behavioral shifts that help a child thrive. Any pharmacological decisions remain strictly between you and your pediatrician.
